Is the Media out of Control

This weeks lesson revolves around the idea that the media, whether it be: tv, radio, movies, or computers; is entirely male dominated. This being said, the things that are seen in the media are more male projected. For instance the oter day, in a magazine, I saw a woman holding a Dooney & Burke Bag but the interesting thing about that was, she was Stark Naked behind that bag. Why? It is a woman’s purse. Why do women need to see a sexy woman naked behind a bag. Shouldn’t that be more directed at men. I am not saying it is right either way but at least if you are going to show that then let it be a woman naked on a lawnmower or something. I am just simply saying. Anyways, it is just that the media fixes it into our brain that these things are normal. The older generation is able to see that it is not, the middle generation sees two sides to it but the younger generation thinks that it is absolutely right. That is why children are getting so out of hand, they don’t know what is REAL anymore. Everything is fabricated to meet the idea of a certain image. The oldre generations need to start helping these children see the truth because they are growing up in a world that is lost and doesn’t know which way is up or down.

Cari, I think the reasoning behind the naked women with the handbag really is directed at women through men. I mean I think that its supposed to have the effect of “wow all these guys are looking at her, i want to be her!” So then you, of course, are supposed to go out and buy the bag. Or maybe its supposed to entice a man to buy the bag for a woman!

A naked woman on a lawnmower…all I can think of is how the grass clippings would be all over the place! :-)

Terbear is right – the issue at hand w/r/t the advertisement is that women see the ad and subconsciously (or consciously) compare themselves with the woman. Physically and in other ways – and always find themselves lacking. So what should we do when we feel unhappy? Pursue some retail therapy, of course! And what if that ad sticks in our head, and we see the purse and…another sale.

    :-)
